EVENT OVERVIEW: The UC Institute of Transportation Studies (UC ITS) recently released a state-commissioned study - Driving California’s Transportation Emissions to Zero - that identifies scenarios and related actions for achieving a carbon-neutral transportation system in California by 2045 while also improving equity, health, and the economy. A rapid transition to zero-emission vehicles, powered by electricity and hydrogen, is essential to achieving this vision; however, transportation in California, as everywhere in the world, is predominantly reliant on liquid petroleum fuels—gasoline for light-duty vehicles, diesel for trucks and non-road vehicles, and kerosene-based jet fuel for most aircraft. In turn, California will need to develop a supply of very low-carbon liquid fuels for legacy internal combustion engine vehicles as well as for hard-to-electrify modes such as aviation and marine applications. In this webinar, UC ITS researchers will share lessons learned from California’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard regulatory program, recommend future policy directions for liquid fuels, and discuss the policy balance to achieve both short- and long-term decarbonization goals for transportation fuels.
